The absolute perfect reason to get outside and move your body, we’ll be bringing it back to the basics like running/cardio fitness & how to pass so it is the perfect time to join.

A classic Rupert Rainbow!

Our touch season is in full swing now, but it is never too late to join! If you’re interested in learning about rugby, maybe saw some wicked plays during the olympics and wanna try those out, this is the perfect time to do so! No experience necessary and no contact/tackling to worry about.

Touch games are Tuesdays and Thursdays 6:30-7:30pm on the CHSS turf field. We hope to see you there!

Thank you for a fun filled season!! From trying to film fun reels on game day and after practices, to playing and practicing in classic Rupert rain, the Siren’s 2024 season was definitely one for the books.

The Prince Rupert Touch Rugby league will be officially starting next week and we hope to see some new faces out there!

Both the Prince Rupert Seamen and the Prince Rupert Sirens take home third at the Saratoga Cup Tournament this weekend in Terrace hosted by the @northmenrfc. What a heck of a season, thank you everyone for all of the support and encouragement as we grow this amazing game in #NorthernBC 🫶🏻🏉

Part 2 of our Siren Spotlight, last but certainly not least our coach Trent!

Trent’s favorite rugby memory is being a part of his first haka playing in New Zealand for East Coast Bays against Argentinian side Rosario.

Trent started playing rugby at 12 years old for his primary school team and continued through high school, where he captained a number of teams. He was also a part of a high-performance players academy in 2009 and 2010. Trent has played against the Sharks Academy and has been a part of Lions Club side.

Trent immigrated to Prince Rupert from South Africa in 2022, and is currently work for himself as a plumbing contractor.

Trent has been a part of the club for some time now, and this year, his wife convinced him to help out with the team. Trent is grateful for this push as he lost his passion for the game abit but working with this incredible team has been awesome and he’s proud to be apart of this team. Just as we are proud to him as our coach!

Part 1 of our final Siren Spotlight on our coach Devin!

Devin’s favourite rugby memory is playing his first Canada U20 game in his mom’s hometown in Derry, Northern Ireland.

Devin started playing rugby in high-school and he is a proud Brantford Harlequin. He’s played for the University of Windsor, Niagara Thunder, Castaway Wanderers, Ontario Blues, Canada u20, Canada East and was a member of Team Canada in 2009 Churchill Cup. The last team Devin played for was AMPO Ordizia in Spain.

Devin came to Rupert in 2018. His girlfriend at the time, now his wife, is a French immersion teacher. He works at Pacific Coast School in town with a few cool other adults.

Devin was training with the rugby club indoors in March and the opportunity to help lead and coach the Sirens appeared he and us are very glad!

A Siren Spotlight on our dual member Lauren!

Lauren says that there are too many memories to choose a favourite but playing her first Canada U20 game in the Bahamas, is definitely up there!

Lauren’s advice for any new players is not to be afraid of it and just go for it. Everyone is going to make mistakes, but that’s part of learning. Embrace the chaos of doing it all, running forwards while passing backwards, tackling and rucking and ask questions! There’s no such thing as a dumb question and chances are someone else probably has the same one.

Lauren has played rugby for 21 years. She started playing in Grade 9 and played through high school. She played one season at SFU when she was 14 and then moved to her permanent home, @burnabylakerfc, where she has played ever since. She has played rep rugby for Vancouver, BC, Canada U20 and Canadian Classics.

Off the field, Lauren is a Professional Geoscientist and works for an engineering firm in geotechnical engineering. Swipe to see her is her work gear!

Lauren was born in the UK and moved to Vancouver when she was 10. She has been coming to Prince Rupert on and off for the last 10 years for work. Last summer, she reached out to the team for any opportunities to play and participated in the touch season. This year, we are fortunate enough that she happened to be in town during the contact season and play some games with the Sirens!

A Siren Spotlight on our other summer student Leila!

On game days Leila gets a serious case of a nervous tummy ache so she must choose her snacks wisely. She tends to go for a granola bar and an apple from the communal snack bag (thanks rugby mamas).

If you ask Leila what inspired her to play rugby she’ll tell you it was @ilonamaher!! and while we all love Ilona the truth is that Leila’s brother got her into it in high school. Leila loved the strong sense of community that she felt joining a team. She says that no matter where in the world you may find yourself, you can always find a supportive group of girls to play with, and that rugby is the perfect opportunity to make lifelong friends and have so many adventures. (We couldn’t agree more!!) This summer with the Sirens Leila has been able to travel and explore so much of northern BC and make so amazing memories.

Leila played rugby for one season in high school and also for a bit with the westmount womens team in Montreal when she was working there for parks Canada. Her main sport growing up was wrestling (even playing on the University of Calgary Dino’s team). She also feels like she could’ve gone pro in polo if only she wasn’t allergic to horses #missedopportunity (although we’re grateful to have her playing rugby).

Off the field Leila loves going to Métis jigging classes with @yvonne4orr and adventuring around Rupert. Leila is working as a summer student at the Port and has been able to rip around on their vessels which has been a highlight. She also likes thrifting, fashion and wants to get into DJing.

Leila grew up in Calgary and came to live with family in Rupert for her summer internship. She is going to miss being surrounded by ocean and mountains when she goes home (who wouldn’t). She found the sirens on Instagram and DMed us inquiring about joining the team she says that was the best decision she made all summer! (Joining rugby really is that easy)

Siren Spotlight on one of our summer students Yvonne!

One thing that surprised Yvonne when she started rugby was how social of a game it is, she wasn’t used to having the home team “host” us for socials. (This is definitely one of the reasons why rugby in Northern BC is amazing).

Yvonne’s favourite part of rugby is squeaking past the defensive line and running away with the ball. On the other hand, she loves the contact of getting a good hit in! She is one tough cookie - swipe to the second picture for proof!!

Growing up Yvonne played a bunch of sports but her main sport was ringette which she has played for 13 years (and counting!) She also had an extrememly successful bought of shot-put in elementary school and was an avid frisbeer in highschool. This is Yvonne’s first year of rugby.

Off the field Yvonne works at the Port Interpretive Centre which is actually why she is in Rupert for the summer. Her hobbies include hanging out with @leila_s_2424 at the library, skateboarding (she loves skateboarding), and going on research deep dives of whatever she finds interesting at the moment.

Yvonne grew up in North Vancouver, and is attending school at UVic, she came to Rupert through a university coop program. She - and us - are very glad that she brougth her cleats with her.

Siren Spotlight on one of our most experienced rugby players Lisa!

While Lisa doesn’t have a specific favourite rugby memory or moment, she would say it’s always great as everywhere she’s been there is always a rugby club that is welcoming to new players which is an easy way to meet new people!

The most challenging aspect of rugby in Lisa’s opinion would be open field tackles where she is up against people who are really good at side stepping … but you just gotta keep going after them!

Lisa started playing rugby when she was in grade 7. Her sisters played on the high school team and their dad was the coach… the high school team was going on a tour when she would be in grade 8 so her dad said if she played a year early she could join! She played and loved it. Lisa played for SFU for 10 years, and in 2012 she played in Australia for half a season for Waverly. She also played for the Kelowna Crows for 1.5 years as well as on team BC from 2008-2011!

Off the field Lisa spends her time hanging out and looking after her 2.5 year old son, and trying to get as much family time in as possible! Other than Rugby her hobby is travelling! She used to love to get away and explore different places some of the places she’s travelled to are Europe, Africa, Australia & New Zealand.

Lisa grew up in Surrey, and moved to the Okanagan in 2019. She moved to Prince Rupert in January as her husband started working with the @princerupertfirerescue

“A Siren Spotlight on our kind and tough siren Sydney!

One thing that surprise Syd about rugby is how supportive and approachable the rugby community was. The team was very welcoming and open to sharing their knowledge and joy of rugby. It made it easy to also fall in love with the sport.

Syd’s favourite aspect of rugby is how fast-paced game is. It encompasses so many aspects of fitness and takes a lot of grit.

Syd didn’t grow up playing rugby but she swam competitively for many years and still loves to go for an occasional swim. She also loves mountain biking and running. Syd joined the rugby team last year, playing her first contact game in June 2023 and the rest is history!

Off the field you can find Syd outside. She loves mountain biking, camping, hiking, and trail running.

Syd grew up in Sherwood Park, Alberta. Her coworker (and friend) invited her to a Sirens practice and she was hooked! Shoutout to @talinator !!”

Siren Spotlight on our youngest siren Kate-Lynn!

Kate’s favourite rugby memory is scoring her first try against Terrace on June 15th this year.

Kate doesn’t have a favourite meal for game day as she prefers not to eat right before the game.

Before Kate started playing rugby, she played field hockey the most. She started playing rugby when she moved to Canada.

Off the field Kate likes doing art, playing video games, and wrestling!

Kate grew up in South Africa and moved to Prince Rupert with her family. She first joined the middle school rugby team after hearing about it on the intercom and thought, why not? Eventually her mother had a client that was on the Sirens team and that was how she joined the women’s team!

Siren Spotlight for our captain Alaina!

Alaina finds the mental aspect of rugby the most challenging, especially right before a game. There is so much to think about - potential tackles to be made, passes, positioning - it can be really overwhelming. That being said having a strong warm-up and focusing on the aspects that are within our control is the best way Alaina overcomes this.

Alaina’s piece of advice for any new players is to not shy away from the contact part of rugby. Yes rugby is a very physical sport but we are far more capable than we give ourselves credit for, and you might surprise yourself!

Alaina grew up playing Ringette, even playing in University but she officially started playing rugby in the fall of 2022.

Off the field Alaina is a Marine Biologist, working within the commercial fishing industry! Some of Alaina’s favourite hobbies includes fishing and being around the water, trying new recipes, and playing with her two dogs!

Alaina grew up in Airdrie Alberta but her dad was born and raised in Prince Rupert so she has many fond memories of Rupert summers. After graduating university Alaina moved to Rupert for a summer job in 2021 and never left! Her partner started playing with the @princerupertseamen Summer 2022, then Alaina joined the club for the fall touch season, and found her way to the Sirens for the 2023 contact season!

Siren Spotlight on one of our new siren!

One thing that surprised Susy about rugby is how sweet and inviting people were on the team.

Susy’s favourite aspect of rugby is the feeling of community and support, especially coming from such driven individuals.

Although Susy did not grow up playing rugby sports have always been a big part of her life, either it being the gym, biking, or even basketball. Susy played fast pitch for over ten years even joining the slow pitch league in Rupert, but she wanted to try something a bit more challenging fitness wise which is how she started rugby!

Off the field Susy is a full time dental hygienist, and her dogs keep quite busy but she still finds time for rugby!

Susy grew up in Quebec and she joined rugby last fall as she knew a couple of girls on the team and thought it would be great way to make new friends and get some fitness in! Susy thought she would only play touch, but was easily roped into playing contact (and is crushing it) for the next season. Susy never thought she would get this involved and have such a good time but here we are.

Siren Spotlight on our biggest cheerleader Christy!

Christy’s favourite rugby memory is from the 2002/03 season when she had trained all spring with the @princerupertseamen and the team went to Kamloops. She remembers tackling so well and effectively that some of the girls were scared to go up against her on the field! Is that #badass or what?

Christy’s advice for any new players is that there is so much to learn and the game can be intimidating and overwhelming at the beginning, BUT the basics never change - tackle low, and run at limbs when attacking.

Growing up Christy did not play rugby as she played soccer. She discovered rugby in her last year of University in 2000/01.

Off the field Christy loves to cook with friends, drink wine and build with her hands. This year she has also discovered how enjoyable gardening is. Currently Christy is self employed baking - in our humble opinion the best - sourdough for her community. Go check out her page at @sourdoughypr

When Christy moved back to Rupert in 2001, there was the men’s team that she trained with, but there wasn’t a ladies team (yet). When she heard that there was a ladies team starting up a couple years ago, she made sure to come out to run and train again for a season. Now she enjoys supporting us and the men’s team and of course attending the socials!

Siren Spotlight on one of the OG Siren the one and only Kennedy Baker!

Ken’s go to meal on game day is a big breakfast! Eggs, hashbrowns, some fruit - and then just snack before playing.

Kennedy’s favourite aspect about rugby is how empowering it makes her feel after playing games. It makes her feel strong and proud of herself. She also loves how inclusive the sport is and how welcoming our team is.

Growing up Ken swapped between a bunch of sorts before she started playing rugby in grade 10. Once she started playing rugby the other sports she play just weren’t as exciting or important.

Off the field Kennedy is a longshore worker! Her favourite hobbies are reading, sewing, and crafting. She also loves a good DIY project.

Kennedy grew up in Prince Rupert and help found the Sirens team when a handful of women in Prince Rupert decided we should start a team!

Siren Spotlight on our beloved Shannen or as she is known on the field Tank!

Shannen’s favourite rugby moment is playing high school rugby and recognizing that although she played many sports, rugby was by far her favourite!

One piece of advice Shannen has for new players is to not worry about the details of the game at first, you won’t truly understand the game until your first game.

Shannen has played rugby since high school! Previous rugby clubs she has played with include: Rutland Senior (highschool), Kelowna Crows, Calgary Saints, Calgary Saracen’s, and now the PR Sirens.

Off the field Shannen owns and operates Frosty Refrigeration, and volunteers on the gymnastics board of directors. She enjoys adventuring with her family, pottery, lifting weights, travelling and scuba diving.

Shannen grew up in Kelowna and travelled a lot after high school working on cruise ships. They used to stop in Rupert on ships and loved the north (a few of them used to stop in for @princerupertseamen practices also!) and she eventually moved here. She trained with the Seamen for several years and more and more women started showing interest. So we decided it was time to branch off and started our ladies team. It’s been so amazing to see more and more incredible, strong women joining the team every year! So grateful for our club.

And with that the 2024 regular rugby season is over. Stay tuned for Saratoga (Rugby Provincials) hosted in Terrace Aug 17/18. The Sirens ended this season with 4 wins out of our 6 games.

Our Teams

Men's

The Prince Rupert Seamen rugby team was founded in 1973. The Seamen play 15s rugby in the Northern & Interior BC Rugby League. In 2024 the Seamen came third at Saratoga (provincials)

Women's

The Prince Rupert Siren's team was founded in 2022. The Sirens play 7s rugby in the Northern & Interior BC Rugby League. In 2024 the Siren's came third at Saratoga (provincials).
